With 25 sports at Weber High, it can be hard for students and the community to stay up to date on all of them. So, here is a roundup of Three of Weber’s fall sports: cross country, boys golf and girls tennis.
Cross Country
After the loss of the great Andrew Harris, who graduated from Weber in 2023, how is the cross-country team holding up against competition? Questioned about the team’s current performance, Garrison Johnson, a junior on the team, responded, “We’re doing alright” added, “We are in a bad mental spot as a team, but we are good ourselves. We could be a lot better.” Asked to expand on what caused the boy’s bad mental spot, Johnson responded; “Going into our 2nd race, we had a bad attitude and didn’t do well. We have low confidence.” Fortunately, the boys just won the 2nd of 4 races they’ve had, with victories at both Freber Invitational, and then City County for the 5th year in a row!
The girls team also won City County for the 3rd time in a row. Questioned about their season, sophomore Gracie Rodarte says, “We’ve done pretty solid, We have good captains and leadership, and we’re physically strong.” The girls XC team lost their first race, Freber, but Rodarte says “We were upset about it, which made us more motivated, and we went on to win City County and Spartan.” With region championships coming up quick, Rodarte was asked how she feels about going into the race, She responded, “We’ve put in the work, and I think Region Championships are ours.”
Boys Golf
The boys golf team has been putting in the work and improving slowly but steadily towards state. When interviewed about how the team is doing, Tyler Tippets, a senior on the team, responded “We’re actually doing good. We started at the bottom and now we’re climbing.” Tippets even said that they have a shot at winning region, and that they have some good players. Although the team has yet to come in first place in any of their competitions, They have placed high against some tough teams, Tippets said, “We took 3rd at our pre-season match, then 5th, 4th and 4th.” The team has high expectations going into state as well, with Tippets saying; “I think state will be better than region because it is near the end of the season and we have more time to prepare.”
The team has a few strong players this year, with Tippets naming off who he thinks are the top four: “Cohen Stanger, Joshua Dye, Creighton Patterson and 9th grader Austin Bybee.” Of course, every strong team has strong rivals, and Weber is no exception, Tippets said, “Fremont is one hundred percent a rival, but we are trying to get on their heels and beat them.”
Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team has been showing exactly what being a warrior is about this season. Not only did they take 3rd at region championships, but they also have won the majority of their matches. When Millie Hardy, a junior on the team, was interviewed about how the team was doing, she said, “Weber’s tennis team has actually done really well this year.” At region, although the team took 3rd, Hardy says “I play doubles 2 and me and my partner won region, and our doubles 1 also won region and our 1st singles took 3rd in region.” Going into state their hopes are high with Hardy saying, “Depending on the competition we face, I think we will do pretty well.”
Although Weber’s tennis is a powerhouse, they do have their competitors and rivals. When questioned about the teams biggest rivals this year, Hardy says “Davis. We should always beat them, and we want to always beat them.” Although Davis is their biggest rival, they are not their only competition. Hardy, though, has no competition as she says her, and her doubles partner, haven’t lost a match
