Weber High’s girl soccer team has won six games this year with more to come! The girls’ soccer team is having one of the best seasons they have had in years! The girls’ soccer team has had an increase of .36 percent win rate. They started off the season strong, winning against Riverton one to nothing in a non-region game. Although they then lost against Green Canyon, the girls would not let that loss bring them down. They learned from their mistakes and followed the loss with a three-win streak against Ogden, Mountain Crest, and Granger. Two out of those three games ended in a shootout but the girls pushed through and finished with a win. Followed by three wins and four losses with a total of six wins and five losses.
Maddie Orme so far this year is a junior and midfielder for Weber High with one goal this year and one assist said,” I think our team has been thriving physically, we are very physically tough and work really hard in practices and games. We have a really strong offense and we work hard on top to not lose the ball. Callie and Ellie are good leaders at the top because they are very tactical.” The team likes to play a very tactical way and when asked about where the team can improve Orme said,” I would change our formation and change the way we play because we play very direct and I feel like we would benefit more if we played more possessional passing.” With more possession, the girls can play smarter and make better moves and plays. When soccer is played with possession it calms the game down and helps the team find the best possible passes and options. If the team decides to change their style of play, they might see more opportunities and better attacks. Orme also said,” This season is not what I expected, everyone has been super positive and we have a lot of great players and we are doing a lot better than I thought we would.” Orme is a great team player and helps motivate the team both on and off the field.
One of the most important parts of the team if not the most important is the defense. Kallie Wallace who is a sophomore goalkeeper at Weber High said,” Our defense is really strong and stops a lot of potential shots from coming in.” Wallace is the starting goalkeeper for the team. With 55 saves and two shutouts this season Wallace is number one in the 6a region one for most saves. When asked why the team has been doing a lot better this season Wallace answered with,” We have a really strong defense and they are very good at keeping the team away from our half.” Wallace also said,” The season has gone better than we expected because coming in from last year we started doing a lot better.” With only being a sophomore Wallace still has lots of years to improve and when asked where she has improved, she said, “I learned how to better understand what my teammates are doing and how to support the way they play.”
The team is playing amazingly and has a good shot at region champs this year. The girls are playing a lot better this season and have better communication and possession. Throughout the season we have seen both great attacks and great defending. If the girls continue to keep up the amazing work, then they may have one of the best seasons that Weber High School has seen in years. With hard work and dedication, the girls can bring home the Region Champs Title for the school.
