At Weber High, all eyes have been on the boys’ basketball team and the hype surrounding them, but there’s also a girls basketball team that’s fighting hard every game.
At the time of publication, the girl’s team is holding at a 6-12 record, being 1-4 in region play. Most would say that the record is underwhelming, except that they have improved from the previous season. Last year the team ended with a 5-17 record, going 2-10 in region play. There is also the eye test to consider. When you watch this team play, they play with heart and effort on every play, displaying a range of offensive talent in shooting and pace of play.
This was best demonstrated in a non-region win against Bear River, where the ladies won 63-38. Avery Shupe, a freshman, had five three-pointers to score 15 points while Abby Sayer, a junior, added two three-pointers and scored 12 points total to lead the Warriors. Logyn Howell, a junior, added eight points, five rebounds, an assist, block, and steal.
Weber also had a nice win in the Burchell Classic, taking down district rival Bonneville in a nail-biter, 44-41. Sayer led the team in points with 10, while four other girls had six each. As a team, they made 10 shots from deep. The next day, the Warriors traveled to Logan, where they absolutely dominated the competition, winning 57-16. Sayer once again put on a show with three three’s and 17 points total, while also adding two steals. Hustle was a big contributor in the win against Logan, where the Warriors stole the ball eight times as a team, and also dished out a combined 13 assists. Teamwork and hustle on defense are how you win basketball games, and this game was an excellent example of that.
Showing growth like this team has been a great sign of how they will end this season, and how they could end up playing next season. With many of the statistical leaders of the team being juniors, such as Sayer, Howell, and Rylee Jugler, the three of them happen to be the top three scorers and rebounders on the team this season. Every major statistical category is led by a junior on the team, with Jugler taking charge by leading three of those categories (field goal percentage, rebounds, blocks). As the team continues to play together, they are only going to get better.
Another positive factor for this team is the coaching, with Trevor Howell leading the pack. This is his first year coaching this team and it takes time for a coach to adjust to their players and the play styles that they have. This should make everyone very optimistic about the future of the team where Howell can grow as a coach, and also help his players grow as well. Where he can help shape Sayer, Howell, and Jugler into a great trio of players and excellent leaders on the court for the rest of the team.
To make it simple, the future of Warriors girls’ basketball is shining brighter than it has in a very long time. So, make sure to keep a close eye on them for the foreseeable future, because they could be a real force against teams very soon.
