ST. GEORGE, Utah – A Utah-based startup is using technology to improve road safety and accountability across the state. Since its launch in September 2023, CollisionCam has installed traffic cameras at some of Utah’s most crash-prone intersections, providing accident footage to drivers at no cost.
The company’s mission is rooted in founder Tate Langston’s personal experience. After a drunk driver hit his truck and fled the scene, Langston discovered that there was no available footage of the incident. “I remember reaching out to the city… and there was no evidence,” he recalled. That moment sparked the idea behind CollisionCam.
Today, the company operates cameras in 13 cities, focusing on major intersections in Washington and Salt Lake Counties—two areas with some of the highest accident rates in Utah. So far, the footage has helped police track down suspected hit-and-run drivers and even clear individuals who were wrongly ticketed.
“We’re hoping this helps make the community safer,” Langston said. “When people know they’re being recorded, maybe they’ll think twice before fleeing the scene.”
Langston said the most rewarding part of the work is helping people prove what really happened. “It’s been pretty cool to see a ticket get dismissed after we shared video showing someone wasn’t at fault.”
Utah crash statistics support the need for such tech. In 2024, Salt Lake County has seen 74 traffic-related fatalities, the highest in the state. Washington County follows closely behind, ranking fourth with 17 road deaths.
In addition to aiding law enforcement and drivers, CollisionCam has gained attention online, sharing some of its most dramatic crash footage on social media to raise awareness about road safety.
