ST. GEORGE, Utah — A tragic incident unfolded at a senior living community in southern Utah on Monday when a 96-year-old resident was discovered in the facility’s pool alongside his electric wheelchair.
Authorities from the St. George Police Department confirmed they were called to Legacy Village of St. George around 1 p.m. on April 7. Police spokesperson Tiffany Mitchell stated that, while the investigation remains ongoing, no signs of foul play have been identified at this time.
In a written statement, Legacy Village expressed sorrow over the loss and said they are working closely with law enforcement during the investigation. The facility emphasized that the pool involved met all required safety regulations for independent living communities.
“Our hearts go out to the resident’s family,” the statement read. “We are fully cooperating with authorities and are ensuring the well-being of our residents and staff during this time.”
Legacy Village explained that residents in its independent living program are not under continuous supervision — a standard practice in such settings — but reiterated that safety remains a top priority.
“This is a deeply saddening moment for all of us,” the facility said. “We are committed to compassionate care and supporting our residents in every way we can.”
To assist those affected by the loss, the facility has made grief counseling and emotional support services available to both residents and staff members.
Out of respect for the family and the ongoing nature of the investigation, Legacy Village said it will not be releasing further details at this time. Police have also declined to provide additional information about the circumstances leading up to the incident.
