Two men were taken into custody late Tuesday night following a tense four-hour standoff with Heber City police, sparked by an argument over children being made to use essential oil toothpaste.
According to law enforcement, the dispute began inside a residence near 200 W 300 S when an adult became upset that the toothpaste had caused a burning sensation in several children’s mouths. The situation escalated when the suspect, reportedly angered by the confrontation, ordered the adult and children to leave. However, when they attempted to exit, police say the man lashed out, assaulting the adult and two children.
Moments later, the suspect allegedly fired multiple gunshots in what authorities described as an attempt to intimidate. Concerned neighbors, hearing the gunfire, quickly contacted 911.
Responding officers tried to communicate with the armed man via phone in an effort to defuse the situation. When those efforts failed and non-lethal tactics proved ineffective, the SWAT team was called in.
The suspect and his roommate then barricaded themselves inside the home, resisting police intervention. Investigators say the roommate actively interfered, preventing officers from engaging with the primary suspect and even issuing threats against law enforcement.
After a prolonged standoff, officers deployed tear gas, successfully forcing the men out. Both were arrested without further incident.
The primary suspect now faces an array of charges, including two felony counts for firearm possession as a restricted person and illegal discharge of a weapon, along with 15 misdemeanor counts covering assault, domestic violence, obstruction of justice, assaulting an officer, drug possession, and public intoxication.
His roommate has also been charged with nine misdemeanors, including interference with law enforcement, assaulting an officer, and drug-related offenses.
Authorities noted that the primary suspect has a long criminal record, including five prior felony convictions. At the time of the incident, he was on probation for other misdemeanor offenses.
The successful resolution of the standoff was made possible through the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies, including aerial surveillance support from a Department of Public Safety helicopter and drone units that monitored the scene.
In a statement, Heber City Police expressed gratitude for the collaborative response that ensured the community’s safety.
“We appreciate the support of all officers and agencies involved in bringing this dangerous situation to a peaceful conclusion. Our department remains dedicated to protecting the public and ensuring those who threaten community safety are held accountable,” officials said.
It’s important to note that all charges are accusations, and those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
