Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in New York City on Presidents Day to voice their opposition to former President Donald Trump, denouncing what they view as his attacks on Democratic policies and the erosion of federal institutions.
The event, dubbed “Not My Presidents Day,” was part of a nationwide movement organized by Rise and Resist, a group advocating for activism across all 50 states.
Marching for Change
Protesters assembled at Union Square in the early afternoon before marching down Fifth Avenue and concluding at Washington Square Park. The demonstration remained peaceful as participants carried signs and chanted against Trump’s policies.
Frank Hickey, one of the protesters, reflected on past social movements and the importance of public demonstrations.
“I remember the civil rights marches of the 1960s when Black voters in states like Mississippi and Alabama risked their lives just to cast a ballot,” Hickey told WABC-TV. “These kinds of protests have always been a part of the American spirit, just like the Vietnam War demonstrations.”
Concerns Over Humanitarian Aid
Another protester, Kristin Mullin, criticized the administration’s decision to halt USAID projects, a move she says has led to delays in crucial humanitarian efforts.
“The administration claimed it was just a 90-day pause, but in reality, it’s a full stop on critical programs,” Mullin explained. “This has left HIV medication sitting in warehouses and food aid from American farmers undelivered to those in need around the world.”
Protests Beyond New York
Similar demonstrations took place in other major cities, including Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area, with participants uniting under a common message of resistance.
The nationwide movement aimed to highlight concerns over policy decisions they believe have negatively impacted both domestic and international communities.
