Senior citizens impacted by a data breach at Vi, a luxury senior living chain, may be eligible for compensation of up to $6,500 as part of a class action settlement. The breach, which occurred on March 13, 2023, exposed sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, financial records, and medical details. While Vi denies any wrongdoing, the settlement provides cash payments and fraud protection services for those affected.
Compensation Breakdown
Eligible individuals can receive payments based on their financial losses:
- Up to $1,500 for ordinary losses, covering costs such as bank fees, credit monitoring expenses, communication charges, and travel costs. Additionally, up to seven hours of lost time can be compensated at $25 per hour, with documentation required.
- Up to $5,000 for extraordinary losses related to fraud or identity theft that can be directly linked to the data breach.
Beyond monetary compensation, those affected will receive two years of free Medical Shield Complete Monitoring, which includes $1 million in identity theft insurance, real-time monitoring of medical data, and access to fraud resolution services.

How to File a Claim
Individuals whose data was compromised in the March 2023 breach can file a claim at ViSettlement.com by February 3, 2025. Required documentation includes bank statements, credit card bills, or receipts for fraud-related expenses. The final settlement approval hearing is set for February 19, 2025.
Hapy Bear Surgery Center Settlement Offers Up to $8,050
In a separate case, Hapy Bear Surgery Center, a pediatric dental facility in Tulare, California, has reached a settlement after a 2023 data breach compromised patient information, including health insurance details and medical records. Plaintiffs argued the breach could have been prevented with better cybersecurity measures.
Affected individuals may qualify for compensation, with payouts structured as follows:
- Up to $500 for ordinary out-of-pocket expenses, such as credit monitoring and bank fees.
- Up to $7,500 for extraordinary losses, including financial damages from fraud or identity theft that have not been reimbursed.
Those notified of the breach or whose personal data was exposed on or about December 27, 2023, are eligible to claim their settlement.
Both settlements present significant financial relief for those impacted, ensuring affected individuals have the resources to recover from potential identity theft and fraud.
