Gov. Cox Lifts Flag Half-Staff Order in Utah for Trump’s Inauguration

Utah Governor Spencer Cox has directed that U.S. flags in the state be raised to full staff for Donald Trump’s upcoming presidential inauguration, temporarily reversing their lowered position in honor of former President Jimmy Carter.

The move follows a similar trend among Republican leaders after Trump criticized the ongoing tribute to Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29. President Joe Biden had ordered U.S. flags at federal buildings to remain at half-staff for 30 days to honor Carter’s legacy. However, Trump voiced frustration over the decision, claiming that flags should not be lowered during his Jan. 20 swearing-in ceremony.

In response, several Republican governors and House Speaker Mike Johnson ordered flags to be returned to full staff ahead of the inauguration. Cox followed suit, directing that Utah’s flags be raised on Monday before being lowered again through Jan. 28 to continue honoring Carter.
