MINNEAPOLIS — The Utah Jazz’s dismal 2024 season concluded on a sour note, as they were defeated 116-105 by the Minnesota Timberwolves, capping off what was the franchise’s worst performance in history.
Anthony Edwards delivered a standout performance for Minnesota, scoring 43 points to lead his team to victory. Former Jazz player Rudy Gobert also had an impressive outing, registering a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Donte DiVincenzo contributed 16 points for the Timberwolves (49-33), who secured the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. They will face the third-seeded Los Angeles Lakers in the upcoming first round of the playoffs.
The Jazz, who ended the season with an NBA-worst 17-65 record, saw Brice Sensabaugh lead their scoring with 22 points. This marked the worst season in Utah’s franchise history, falling short of their previous low by six games. Despite the loss, the Jazz’s bottom finish in the standings did ensure them a prime spot in the upcoming draft lottery, with a 14% chance of securing the first overall pick.
The team was depleted by injuries, with 10 players sidelined for the final game. A buzzer-beater by Washington against Miami further confirmed the Jazz’s place at the bottom of the league.
Keyonte George, who logged every minute of the game, became the first Jazz player since John Stockton in 1992 to play the full 48 minutes. He contributed 14 points and seven assists, though he struggled with his shooting, missing all eight of his attempts from beyond the arc.
In other notable news, Edwards initially faced a suspension for accumulating a technical foul, but the league later rescinded the penalty after reviewing the situation. Edwards capped off his regular season by setting an NBA record with 320 made three-pointers, going 7 for 18 from beyond the arc in this game.
Minnesota trailed for much of the game but surged ahead in the second half, starting with a steal by Nickeil Alexander-Walker, which led to a fast break and a dunk by Gobert that gave the Timberwolves a 50-49 lead just before halftime.
As the season ends, the Jazz look to the future, with hopes of improving their roster through the draft and turning the page on this challenging campaign.
