SPRINGVILLE, Utah — A dramatic train collision in Springville on Saturday night was avoided thanks to the quick actions of a bystander and a locomotive engineer. According to Springville Fire & Rescue, a local citizen acted swiftly to help the driver exit the vehicle moments before the train struck it and carried it around 100 yards down the tracks.
The incident took place when a vehicle became stalled on the tracks. The train’s locomotive engineer played a crucial role in preventing a more catastrophic outcome, engaging multiple engine brakes to slow the train’s approach. This action, while not typical for locomotive engineers, gave the driver just enough time to escape.
A post from Springville Fire & Rescue praised the efforts of both the local community and the train’s crew: “Kudos to the quick thinking of both the locomotive engineer and Springville PD. Their actions saved a life in a critical moment.”
Union Pacific Railroad spokesperson Robynn Tysver clarified that the train involved in the collision was a BNSF train, not Union Pacific as initially reported. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained by the train crew.
The Springville Police Department had posted an advisory earlier, urging drivers to avoid railroad crossings at 400 West, 400 North, and Center Street. Lt. Warren Foster of the department explained that once the driver called for help, officers advised them to evacuate the vehicle, and shortly after, the train struck the empty car.
At this time, details on the vehicle involved remain scarce, and officials are continuing their investigation. No further updates have been provided as of yet.
