WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Authorities are investigating a fire that broke out in an abandoned home in West Valley City, believed to have been set by a group of juveniles.
The West Valley City Fire Department responded to the call around 5:13 p.m. after a neighbor reported seeing several young people fleeing the area of a home at 4000 South and 6000 West, with visible smoke coming from the building. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke emanating from the basement.
According to fire officials, the home had been slated for demolition for some time, with plans to clear the site for new residential developments. The house had long been abandoned and was reportedly frequented by individuals using the property for unauthorized activities. Officials noted that the house had broken windows and other points of entry, making it easy for people to access.
Upon entering the basement, responders discovered piles of scrap wood and old doors that had been intentionally set on fire. The fire did not appear to have been started for any constructive purpose, and authorities believe it was a reckless act.
Fortunately, the fire was quickly contained, and the damage was minimal due to the house’s already deteriorated condition. No injuries were reported.
The fire department is now working to identify the juveniles involved in the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact dispatch at 801-840-4000.
