TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – Authorities have provided new details about a shooting incident linked to drugs, which prompted several schools in the Granite School District to implement secure protocols as a precaution.
According to Lt. Steve Katz of the West Valley City Police Department, two adults suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. One of the victims required emergency surgery due to the severity of their injuries.
“At this stage, the evidence suggests the incident was drug-related,” Katz stated.
Juvenile Detained as Investigation Continues
Police have taken one juvenile into custody for questioning. However, investigators are still determining whether the individual was directly involved in the shooting or was simply present at the scene.
“There are likely additional individuals connected to this case that we haven’t identified yet,” Katz added.
Although no direct threats were made against schools or students, school officials opted to activate security protocols out of an abundance of caution. Most schools resumed normal operations within an hour.
Authorities have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Earlier Report: Schools Implement Secure Protocol Due to Nearby Police Activity
Earlier in the day, nine schools in the Granite School District were placed under secure protocol following reports of police activity in the area.
The affected schools included:
- Taylorsville Elementary
- Fremont Elementary
- Granger Elementary
- Vista Elementary
- Plymouth Elementary
- Eisenhower Jr. High
- West Lake Jr. High STEM
- Granger High School
- Taylorsville High School
Later, authorities lifted security measures at most locations, except for Taylorsville Elementary and Granger High School, while also adding Roosevelt Continuation School to the list of schools under protocol.
Shooting Incident Linked to School Security Measures
The West Valley City Police Department confirmed that officers responded to a shooting near 3800 Burningham Drive, where two adults were critically injured. One person has been detained in connection with the case.
Understanding Secure Protocol Measures
A secure protocol is activated when there is a potential safety concern off-campus. During this time, schools follow these measures:
- Students and staff remain inside the building.
- All exterior doors are locked to prevent unauthorized access.
- Classes continue as normal inside the school.
- Parents and visitors are not permitted until the protocol is lifted.
The Granite School District has several emergency response protocols, including full lockdowns, evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, and holding students in designated areas to ensure their safety.
