As we wrap up the work week, a weekend storm is on the horizon, set to bring a mix of rain and snow across Utah. The northern half of the state will experience wet conditions, with heavy snow expected in the mountains.
Clouds will begin to gather by Friday evening, signaling the start of a wet weekend, especially for northern Utah. The weather will include mountain avalanche warnings, while valley air quality—poor throughout the week—should improve thanks to a shift in the winds.
In the mountain regions above 7,000 feet, expect dense, heavy snow that will accumulate quickly. Snow levels are forecasted to rise throughout the weekend, a rare occurrence for Utah winter storms. The storm will pack a punch, especially in the north, prompting the National Weather Service to issue winter storm warnings for the Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs and other northern mountains. These areas are expected to see 6-12 inches of snow by the end of the weekend.
The Wasatch Mountains, which will be the first and last to receive snow, are under a Winter Storm Warning from Friday evening through Monday evening. The Western Uintas could receive up to two feet of snow, while the Bear River Range is poised to take the brunt of the storm with up to four feet of snow in some areas.
The Utah Avalanche Center has raised the avalanche danger to “High” for much of northern Utah and southern Idaho. The influx of new snow will strain weak layers in the snowpack, triggering widespread avalanche activity.
For anyone venturing into the backcountry, the center urges caution. It’s recommended to bring avalanche rescue gear, avoid slopes steeper than 30 degrees, and stay informed about conditions on the center’s website. Skiers and snowboarders should never travel alone and are advised to have one person cross a slope at a time, with companions observing from a safe distance.
In the Salt Lake Valley and areas north, expect significant rainfall, with forecasts suggesting over an inch of moisture. Despite the wet weather, temperatures will warm up across the state, with northern Utah highs climbing into the 50s and possibly touching 60º by Sunday and Monday. In St. George, temperatures could reach the low 70s early next week, signaling a brief break from the wintry conditions.
