Kroger Customer Calls $400 Grocery Checkout Experience ‘Unacceptable’ After Bagging on Floor
Georgia – A Kroger customer in Waycross, Georgia, was frustrated after claiming he had to bag his $400 worth of groceries on the store’s floor due to a lack of open registers. The customer, identified as Colby, said he had to use the self-checkout station, but complained about the limited packing space.
“I literally had to bag my food onto the floor,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), calling the experience a “customer service fail.” He posted a photo showing chips and other products in Kroger bags on the floor, alongside a receipt that indicated a $360+ purchase.
In response, a Kroger spokesperson thanked Colby for bringing the issue to their attention and offered him the opportunity to send a direct message for further assistance. However, Colby expressed skepticism about reaching out online.

This incident is part of a larger trend of shopper frustrations, particularly during the busy holiday season. Customers nationwide have voiced their complaints about long lines, delays in verifying self-checkout scans, and policies that appear to slow down the checkout process, such as limits on the number of items that can be scanned at self-checkout stations.
Meanwhile, retailers like Walmart and Target have been experimenting with new strategies to address both convenience and theft. Walmart has limited self-checkout lanes to Walmart+ members and tested RFID-powered kiosks to reduce receipt checks, while Target has expanded its express checkout lanes with item limits to increase efficiency. However, many customers have criticized these changes, especially as it sometimes leads to longer waits and fewer open registers during peak shopping times.
Kroger quickly apologized to the disgruntled customer, promising to address the issue to ensure better experiences in the future.
