New Law Enforcement Officer Sworn In by Gov. Cox in Utah
On Monday, Governor Spencer Cox swore in over 140 new law enforcement officers for the newly formed Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement.
The division, created by the Utah Legislature in 2024, consolidates various existing departments to improve law enforcement efficiency in Utah’s backcountry and waterways. Governor Cox explained that the division was a recommendation in four separate audits and would better protect the state’s natural resources.
Before administering the oath, Governor Cox took a moment to express gratitude to the officers’ families. “I just want to thank your families, your spouses, your kids, your significant others, the people that you spend time with because these jobs are a sacrifice and it’s a sacrifice for them too,” Cox said.
The Governor emphasized the importance of protecting Utah’s natural resources for future generations, describing it as a core duty of government.

Joel Ferry, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, highlighted the unique challenges faced by the new law enforcement team. “It’s not for everybody, it’s not for the faint of heart to be out in the wild alone protecting and standing up for these resources of Utah,” Ferry said. He acknowledged the tough work ahead and expressed appreciation for the officers’ efforts.
Todd Royce, Director of the Division of Law Enforcement, recognized the history the new team is building upon. “It’s not new. It’s a new chapter in the Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement,” Royce stated, acknowledging the contributions of past officers and leaders.
