Trash Collection Changes in Salt Lake City: When to Set Out Your Bins

Salt Lake City – For the first time in over three decades, Salt Lake City is revising its curbside trash collection schedule. The updated schedule, implemented by the city’s Waste and Recycling Division, will take effect on Monday, February 3, and aims to improve efficiency by aligning the heaviest workloads with the middle of the week when resources are most robust.

New Trash Collection Schedule:

  • Current Monday pickups will move to Tuesdays.
  • Current Tuesday pickups will move to Mondays.
  • Current Wednesday pickups will move to Fridays.
  • Current Thursday pickups will remain unchanged.
  • Current Friday pickups will move to Wednesdays.

Residents are encouraged to place their bins out the night before their new collection day.

“When it comes to essential services like waste and recycling, we know that residents value reliability and efficiency above all else,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “This new schedule will lead to more consistent service with fewer disruptions due to weather or unexpected events, making it a smart choice for our city.”

Addressing City Growth

Chris Bell, director of the city’s Waste and Recycling Division, explained that Salt Lake City’s uneven growth over the last 30 years has created imbalanced workloads for trash collection. “The weekly pickup days scheduled 30 years ago are no longer as efficient as they once were,” Bell said.

Using neighborhood data and advanced mapping technology, city officials designed the new routes to reduce travel time, fuel consumption, and overall inefficiency for collection trucks.

Exceptions and Additional Services

The schedule change will not affect:

  • Apartments, condominiums, or businesses with private dumpsters.
  • The city’s Call-2-Haul program.
  • Some residents participating in the curbside glass recycling program will be notified of new monthly pick-up dates by Momentum Recycling, the city’s third-party service provider.

Salt Lake City officials are confident the updated schedule will enhance reliability and reduce operational disruptions, reflecting the city’s commitment to serving its growing population effectively.
