West Valley CitySha Reh, the 18-year-old survivor of a tragic murder-suicide in West Valley City, Utah, has made remarkable strides in his recovery since he was found with a gunshot wound to the head in December 2024. Sha’s extended family shared an update on his progress, offering new insights into his physical and emotional healing.

On December 17, 2024, five family members were found dead at a home in West Valley City, with Sha Reh discovered alive in the garage. Despite suffering a severe gunshot wound, he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. At the time, Sha was 17, but his 18th birthday coincided with the funeral for his lost family members, a poignant moment as reported by his relatives in a statement on January 8.

“Sha Reh cannot remember the events of that tragic night,” the family shared, “but his short and long-term memory have significantly improved since being hospitalized.” His progress includes improvements in his ability to vocalize his emotions, feelings, and needs, with continued success in physical, occupational, and speech therapies.

He has since been moved from the trauma unit to a regular hospital room, and his family noted that he is aware of his family’s loss, expressing sadness but also hope for the future.

However, Sha Reh has suffered from “new vision loss,” meaning he cannot see but is sometimes able to discern light from darkness. His family remains hopeful that with time and medical miracles, he may regain his sight, although the medical professionals are unsure of the prognosis.

Before the incident, Sha was an honors student at Granger High School with a 3.9 GPA and had plans to enroll at the University of Utah in the fall of 2025. Despite the devastating circumstances, he has completed the requirements to graduate, according to his family.

After his hospital release, Sha Reh may attend the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, under the care of his aunt, uncle, and cousins. His family expressed deep gratitude for the support they’ve received from the people of Utah and beyond.

“Sha Reh is our miracle and our hero,” his family stated. They requested privacy as they navigate the challenges ahead but expressed profound appreciation for the medical professionals and school staff who have supported Sha throughout his recovery.

Authorities have previously shared details about the incident, which is believed to be a murder-suicide. Investigators suspect that 42-year-old Dae Reh, Sha’s father, was responsible for the killings, as a handgun was found beneath his body. The victims were identified as Bu Meh, 38, Sha’s mother, and the couple’s three children: Boe Reh, 11, Kristina Ree, 8, and Nyay Meh, 2. The family had fled Myanmar and resettled in Utah about a decade ago.

As Sha continues to recover, his family remains committed to supporting him and is inspired by his remarkable resilience and faith.
