PROVO, Utah – Brian Santiago, a long-time member of the BYU athletics department, has been selected as the university’s new athletic director, succeeding Tom Holmoe in the role. Santiago, who has been with BYU since 1997, has built an impressive career at the university, rising through the ranks from assistant basketball coach to his latest position as deputy athletic director.
Having served in various administrative roles over the years, including senior associate athletic director, Santiago has a deep understanding of BYU’s athletic operations. His extensive tenure with the department makes him a natural fit for the leadership role.
“I’m truly honored to take on this new responsibility and to work with such a dedicated group of coaches, staff, and student-athletes,” Santiago said. “BYU Athletics is much more than just a competitive program—it’s integral to the university’s mission. We are focused on developing well-rounded student-athletes who are equipped to succeed academically, athletically, and spiritually, all while making a positive impact in the world.”
BYU President Shane Reese expressed enthusiasm over the appointment, noting Santiago’s exceptional leadership record and his vision for the future of BYU Athletics. “Brian has a strong track record of leadership and an understanding of the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics. I am confident that he will continue to strengthen the university’s academic and spiritual mission while advancing BYU Athletics to new heights,” Reese said.
The appointment comes after BYU completed its second year in the Big 12 conference, marking notable achievements, including national championships in both men’s and women’s cross country. Additionally, the men’s basketball and football teams finished highly ranked in national polls, and the university continues to perform well across all NCAA Division I sports in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings.
Santiago, a Provo native, holds an associate’s degree from Utah Valley University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on international business from Fresno State. He also had a successful basketball career at both Utah Valley and Fresno State, where he led the Western Athletic Conference in assists and three-point shooting percentage. His athletic talent earned him a spot on the pre-selection Olympic team for Puerto Rico.
Santiago will be officially introduced as the new athletic director at a press conference scheduled for Wednesday morning. His leadership promises to continue the legacy of excellence established by his predecessor, Tom Holmoe, who is retiring after years of service.
