SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — A firefighter from South Jordan has tragically passed away after being found unresponsive while on duty Monday afternoon. Corban Summers, a 23-year veteran of the fire service, is being remembered as a hero who dedicated his life to helping others.
On April 21, at approximately 2 p.m., Summers was found unresponsive in his room at Fire Station 61 on S. Redwood Road. The South Jordan Fire Department immediately initiated life-saving efforts and called for support from nearby stations. Summers was rushed to Jordan Valley Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His name was withheld until Tuesday, out of respect for his family.
Summers had served with the South Jordan Fire Department for over two decades, also spending time with fire departments in West Jordan, Bluffdale, and Saratoga Springs. He was well-respected in the firefighting community for his service and selflessness.
Remembering Corban Summers
On April 22, South Jordan Fire Chief Chris Dawson shared heartfelt memories of Summers, calling him “a great man and a great firefighter.” Dawson fondly recalled an incident from 2015, when Summers, while off-duty, performed CPR on a citizen in distress.
“I don’t know a firefighter who better embodied the spirit of helping others than Corban. He would jump in to help anyone—his fellow firefighters, a stranger, or anyone in need,” Dawson said.
Preparations are currently underway for a memorial service to honor Summers’ life and legacy. Further details about the circumstances surrounding his passing will be released as they become available.
City and Community Mourns
South Jordan officials expressed their sorrow and appreciation for the support received from the community and neighboring fire departments. “Our hearts go out to his family, his friends, and everyone in the fire service who knew him,” Chief Dawson remarked. “We’ve been deeply affected by this loss, and we appreciate the kindness and support we’ve received.”
South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey also shared her condolences. “We are heartbroken by the loss of Corban Summers. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.
Summers had recently married in February and leaves behind four adult children. Chief Dawson noted that the loss would be felt deeply within the firefighting community, where Summers was known for his kindness, dedication, and professionalism.
A Friend Remembers
Johnny Riche, a long-time friend of Summers, described him as a “jokester” with a bright personality who could always bring joy to others. “He was the guy who could light up any room with his humor,” Riche said. “No matter what you were going through, he would make you laugh.”
Riche praised Summers as a devoted husband, father, and friend, saying, “Corban would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He loved being a fireman, and he was proud of it. He was a true hero, and he’ll be greatly missed.”
