SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Corner Canyon High School students received a hero’s welcome over the weekend after winning big at Utah’s statewide high school theater competition.
Returning home with one of the highest honors from the prestigious Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) championship, the drama team was greeted by a police escort and enthusiastic supporters cheering their victory. A celebratory video shows students stepping off the school bus proudly wearing medals and carrying trophies and plaques — the result of months of hard work and dedication.
The statewide competition, hosted by UHSAA, brought together top-performing high school theater students from across Utah. Categories included everything from classic and contemporary scenes to musical theatre, costume design, and pantomime. Participants earned their way to state by excelling at regional events held earlier this spring.
To qualify for individual categories, students needed to score at least 60 points at the regional level, while plays needed to place in the top three — although some exceptions are made for fourth and fifth place. At the state level, only the top three ranked plays are awarded plaques, while all others receive certificates. Individual performances that earn at least 65 points are awarded medals.
The Utah Advisory Council of Theatre Teachers (UACTT), which has partnered with UHSAA for nearly a decade, plays a key role in organizing the events and supporting drama educators across the state.
With their recent win, Corner Canyon’s drama students have solidified their place among Utah’s best — and brought pride and excitement to their school and community.
