SALT LAKE CITY — Get ready for a taste of summer in Utah, as unseasonably warm temperatures take over much of the state through Friday before a cool-down arrives Sunday.
A strong ridge of high pressure is setting up over the region, pushing temperatures well above normal for this time of year. With plenty of sunshine in the forecast, the Wasatch Front is expected to see highs climb into the upper 70s and possibly hit 80°F on Thursday, while St. George could approach the 90-degree mark.
Salt Lake City’s record high for Thursday is 81°F, and St. George’s is 92°F — both could be challenged as the heat intensifies.
Friday brings even more warmth, thanks to a developing southwest wind pattern. Daytime highs are forecast to reach the low 80s in northern Utah and the low 90s in the south. These readings will once again hover near daily record highs — 83°F in Salt Lake City and 94°F in St. George.
But changes are on the horizon.
Cloud cover is expected to increase across northern Utah on Saturday, bringing slightly cooler conditions to the Wasatch Front with highs dropping into the low to mid-70s. Southern Utah, however, will remain hot with highs near 90°F.
A weak cold front will sweep through northern Utah late Saturday, bringing a minor chance of isolated showers. While widespread rain is not expected, winds will shift from the southwest to the northwest, ushering in a much cooler air mass by Sunday.
Sunday will bring a dramatic drop in temperatures — highs in northern Utah will only reach the mid-50s. In southern Utah, the front will arrive Sunday morning, bringing dry conditions and lowering temperatures from the 90s to the low 80s.
Looking ahead to next week, dry and calm weather will return. Temperatures are expected to rebound gradually, reaching the 60s and 70s in the north and mid-to-upper 80s in the south.
