A devastating helicopter crash in the Hudson River near the New Jersey shoreline Thursday afternoon has left six people dead, including three children, according to authorities.
The aircraft, a Bell 206 operated by a local tour company, went down around 3:15 p.m. shortly after departing from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, officials confirmed. The crash occurred within 15 minutes of takeoff, in waters off the coast of Jersey City and Hoboken.
All six people aboard the helicopter perished, including the pilot and a visiting family from Spain. The names of the victims have not yet been disclosed by officials.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to the family of those who were on board.”
Emergency crews from both New York and New Jersey rushed to the scene. The FDNY deployed rescue units to the crash site while other responders were spotted conducting search operations in the area.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul extended her support to local emergency services and shared her sympathies. “I join all New Yorkers in praying for those we’ve lost and their families,” Hochul said.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy confirmed the involvement of New Jersey State Police, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and various local responders in the operation.
Federal authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), will lead a full investigation into the cause of the crash.
