Deserae Turner, the Utah teen who survived a horrific shooting in 2017, is now entering hospice care after years of battling severe health challenges related to the attack. At just 22 years old, Deserae continues to inspire others with her strength and grace, even in the face of unimaginable adversity.
At age 14, Deserae was shot in the head and left for dead in a canal bed in Smithfield by two classmates. Miraculously, she survived. Her assailants were later sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison. Since that life-changing moment, Deserae has defied the odds, pushing forward with an unwavering spirit.
“I’ve been in pain for eight years,” Deserae told ABC4.com. “It’s time I start making decisions that ease that pain.”
Over the years, Deserae has undergone nearly 50 medical procedures — including 16 brain surgeries — according to a GoFundMe campaign created by her family. Despite the toll on her body, she refused to let the trauma define her. She graduated high school, served a mission for her church, and even got married. Her journey has been one of courage and resilience.
Now, due to complications with her health, Deserae has transitioned to hospice care. She says she’s ready for what lies ahead.
“Of course death is scary,” she shared. “But I know where I’m going, and I’m ready. I just hope it comes peacefully.”
Her mother, April Turner, praised her daughter’s strength. “She’s everything you’d hope your child could be—brave, determined, loving, and unbelievably strong. I’m so proud of her.”
As she faces her final days, Deserae is expressing heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has stood by her side through the years.
“There’s no way to thank every person individually,” she said. “But this is my way of saying thank you to each and every one of you. Your love, prayers, donations, and encouragement have meant the world to me.”
Her final message to others? Keep going.
“Take the next step in your life. Do what’s good for you, just like I’m trying to do for myself.”
The Turner family is raising funds to help cover Deserae’s funeral expenses and ongoing medical costs. In just hours after launching the GoFundMe on April 8, the campaign had already brought in over $15,000.
