NORTH OGDEN, Utah — North Ogden Police Chief Brian Eynon has been reinstated following an investigation into his participation in a DUI training exercise, city officials announced Tuesday. While the review found that Eynon exercised poor judgment, no criminal activity was identified.
Eynon had been placed on leave in February after city council members received reports that warranted further scrutiny. The investigation, conducted by independent law enforcement experts from the Department of Public Safety, examined his actions during a “wet lab” DUI training.
A wet lab is a controlled training exercise where volunteers consume alcohol to reach specific blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels. Officers then conduct field sobriety tests to improve their ability to recognize impairment. During one such training session, Eynon personally volunteered to become intoxicated.
City officials determined that while his choice was inappropriate for someone in his position, he did not violate any laws. They also confirmed that municipal funds were not used to purchase alcohol and that no additional policy infractions occurred.
The investigation highlighted a need for greater oversight in such training exercises. As a result, Chief Eynon will be responsible for implementing new policies to ensure future sessions follow stricter guidelines. Additionally, the city plans to introduce training programs across all departments to reinforce responsible decision-making.
City Manager Jon Call stated that despite this lapse in judgment, Eynon has taken full responsibility and remains dedicated to serving the community. Officials believe that with improved oversight and accountability measures in place, he will continue to lead the department effectively.
Eynon was appointed North Ogden’s police chief in May 2023, bringing nearly three decades of law enforcement experience from multiple jurisdictions .
