A recent analysis by Preply, an online marketplace connecting language learners with tutors, examined over 57,000 Google reviews from more than 10,000 fast food establishments to determine which chains consumers believe offer the worst value for money. The results? These three fast food chains stood out as being overpriced for what they provide.
Shake Shack
Shake Shack has long been a fan favorite, but many customers now question whether the quality justifies the cost. When the first Los Angeles location debuted in West Hollywood in 2016, eager customers lined up around the block for a taste. Some even waited over an hour! But was it worth the hype? Many diners found the burgers to be decent but not extraordinary, especially given the price. A simple meal—including a burger, fries, and a shake—can easily exceed $24 before tax, making it a costly option for fast food. Online discussions, including on forums like Reddit, highlight how many consumers are shocked by the pricing. This might explain why Shake Shack closed multiple locations in Southern California and across the U.S. in 2024.
Five Guys
Another beloved burger chain, Five Guys, is also frequently called out for its high prices. While known for fresh ingredients and generous portions, the cost of a meal has risen significantly. The brand has been upfront about its pricing strategy—CEO Jerry Murrell previously explained in an Inc. interview that Five Guys adjusts prices based on ingredient costs. For example, if the cost of mayonnaise triples, the chain pays more and passes the increase onto customers. While they prioritize quality, a meal consisting of a burger, fries, and a drink can also hit the $24 mark, leading many to wonder if it’s truly worth it.
Sugar Factory
Unlike the other two, Sugar Factory isn’t strictly a fast food chain but is still seen as overpriced. Known for its extravagant and Instagram-worthy desserts, the restaurant serves over-the-top creations like $99 sundaes. While the brand embraces a fun and luxurious experience, many customers feel the price tag doesn’t align with the quality. Reviews frequently mention disappointment over high costs, suggesting it’s more about the spectacle than the food itself.
Final Thoughts
While all three of these chains have loyal followings, their pricing continues to spark debate among customers. Do you agree with this list? Let us know what you think!
