
DETROIT – The Utah Hockey Club overcame an early deficit to secure a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.
Vejmelka Shines After Signing Extension
Goaltender Karel Vejmelka, fresh off signing a five-year contract extension, played a crucial role in Utah’s win, making 38 saves despite facing heavy pressure. Detroit outshot Utah 40-19, but Vejmelka stood tall, allowing his team to mount a comeback after conceding two first-period goals.
Utah’s Offensive Surge
Utah (28-25-9) saw ten different players register at least one point in the game, with Michael Kesselring contributing two assists.
- Dylan Guenther struck first, giving Utah a 1-0 lead at 2:08 of the opening period with a sharp one-timer from the left circle, set up by Alexander Kerfoot.
- Detroit responded quickly, as Dylan Larkin buried a loose puck in the slot at 3:17, leveling the score at 1-1.
- The Red Wings (30-26-6) then took the lead at 8:49, when Jonatan Berggren capitalized on a rebound near the left post during a delayed penalty.
Utah Storms Back
Trailing 2-1, Utah turned up the pressure in the second period.
- Nick Schmaltz netted the equalizer at 13:01, hammering a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle after a cross-slot feed from Barrett Hayton on the power play.
- Kevin Stenlund put Utah ahead 3-2 early in the third, collecting a loose puck at the right face-off dot and snapping a shot past Detroit goaltender Alex Lyon, who finished with 15 saves.
- Lawson Crouse sealed the game at 7:51, receiving a spinning backhanded pass from Jack McBain before lifting a wrist shot over Lyon’s glove.
Detroit’s Struggles Continue
The loss marks four straight defeats for the Red Wings, who struggled to convert despite their shot advantage.
Rookie forward Carter Mazur, making his NHL debut, suffered an upper-body injury on his second shift and did not return.
