Wednesday Forecast: Cloudy Skies with Rain & Snow on the Way

SALT LAKE CITY – Happy Wednesday, Utah! The day started off calm, with a blend of sunshine and scattered clouds. However, winds have been picking up from the southwest, signaling changes ahead. Temperatures will climb into the mid-50s in northern Utah and reach the mid-60s in southern Utah before an approaching storm system shakes things up.

Storm System to Bring Rain, Snow & Cooler Temps

A strong atmospheric river system is set to move in from Wednesday afternoon through Friday, bringing steady rain to the valleys, heavy snowfall in the mountains, and a dip in temperatures.

  • Valley Rain & Snow: Expect widespread rainfall overnight Wednesday into Thursday, with precipitation amounts reaching up to 0.75 inches before colder air arrives. By Thursday night into Friday morning, snow levels will drop, possibly bringing accumulating snowfall to valley floors just in time for the Friday morning commute.
  • Mountain Snowfall: This storm system carries more moisture than the earlier one this week, meaning higher snowfall totals. Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for the Wasatch Mountains, Western Uintas, Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs, Central Mountains, and Southern Mountains through Friday afternoon. These areas could see 1-3 feet of snow, making mountain travel hazardous.
  • Wind & Travel Impacts: Gusty winds up to 40 mph could impact travel in the Eastern Uintas, La Sal Mountains, and Abajo Mountains, where Winter Storm Watches are also in effect. Traction laws may be enforced in areas like Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons due to difficult driving conditions.

Looking Ahead: A Warmer Weekend Before Another Storm

Once the storm system moves out Friday afternoon, the weather will dry out, and temperatures will rebound for the weekend. Northern Utah will see highs return to the 40s and 50s, while southern Utah will enjoy temperatures in the 50s and 60s. However, another potential storm system is on the horizon early next week, with possible impacts between Monday night and Wednesday.

Spring Forward This Weekend!

Don’t forget—Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday! Clocks will jump ahead one hour, meaning sunsets will be after 7 p.m. starting next week.
