With new tariffs set to begin on March 4, Utah’s business and political leaders are exploring ways to mitigate potential economic challenges.
Tariff Impact on Utah’s Economy
After initial negotiations with Canada and Mexico, former President Donald Trump confirmed that a 25% tariff on these two nations will go into effect, along with an increase to 20% on Chinese imports.
The World Trade Center Utah is closely monitoring how these tariffs will impact businesses across the state.
“Roughly 25% of Utah jobs depend on international trade, which accounts for over 430,000 jobs statewide,” said John Freedman of the World Trade Center Utah.
Reasons Behind the Tariffs
According to a White House statement from February, the tariffs are aimed at pressuring Mexico, Canada, and China to take stronger action against illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.
“Tariffs are a powerful tool to protect national interests,” the statement read. “President Trump is prioritizing American safety and security.”
Industries Most Affected
The tariffs are expected to impact automobiles, agriculture, technology, and crude oil imports, which could result in higher prices for groceries and gasoline.
Some Utah businesses are concerned about absorbing the extra costs or passing them on to consumers. For many small and mid-sized companies, shifting to domestic production will be a difficult adjustment.
“We pride ourselves on being resilient and innovative, but small businesses don’t have the resources to quickly transition production back to the U.S.,” Freedman noted.
Car Prices May Rise
Local car dealerships are already anticipating price hikes, with estimates ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 per vehicle.
“Car parts cross borders multiple times before final assembly, making it nearly impossible to avoid tariff costs,” said Mike Kistemaker of Ken Garff Automotive Group.
Some Honda models, like the Civic and CR-V, are manufactured in Canada, meaning they could see significant price increases.
Stock Market Reaction
Following Trump’s tariff announcement, U.S. stock markets took a hit as investors reacted to the news. Analysts expect long-term economic impacts, though it’s too early to predict the full consequences.
