6 Utah Agencies Chase and Confront Arson Suspect in Deadly Incident

Salt Lake City – A deadly police pursuit involving the Salt Lake City Police Department and five other Utah law enforcement agencies resulted in the death of a suspect late Thursday night. The suspect, a 27-year-old male linked to a residential arson case, was killed after a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire.

Suspect Identified in New Year’s Day Arson

Authorities connected the suspect to an arson that occurred on New Year’s Day at 2665 East 2100 South in Salt Lake City. Investigators had determined the man was potentially armed and wearing body armor, heightening the risk during the pursuit.

Multi-Agency Pursuit Begins

The chase began around 11:30 p.m. Thursday when law enforcement tracked the suspect to Orem. His location was relayed to agencies across Utah and Salt Lake counties. Officers attempted to stop the suspect, who was driving a truck, but he refused to comply, prompting a pursuit that stretched into Salt Lake County.

During the chase, the suspect reportedly fired multiple shots at pursuing officers. Law enforcement deployed spike strips in an effort to disable the truck, but despite flattened tires, the suspect continued to evade capture.

Crash Ends Pursuit

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday, the pursuit ended when the suspect’s truck crashed and rolled over near 12400 South Redwood Road in Riverton. The vehicle landed on its roof, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his name.

Involvement of Multiple Agencies

The incident involved officers from the Salt Lake City Police Department, Taylorsville Police Department, Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, Utah County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, and West Valley City Police Department. Seven officers from Salt Lake City Police were directly involved, but the total number of officers from other agencies is still under review.

No injuries were reported among law enforcement personnel or civilians during the pursuit.

Investigation Underway

The Salt Lake City officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure in officer-involved critical incidents. The West Jordan Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting and pursuit.

Further details, including the suspect’s identity and additional findings from the investigation, are expected in the coming days.
