A tragic accident near Kearns Junior High School on Thursday morning claimed the life of a 12-year-old student who was biking across a crosswalk, according to the Unified Police Department.
Crash Details
The incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. when Adam Mahamat entered a crosswalk near the school at 4140 West. As he was crossing, he was hit by an eastbound Chevy Tahoe traveling along Sams Boulevard.
Emergency responders quickly arrived and administered life-saving measures before transporting the boy to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
Community Reaction
In response to the tragedy, Granite School District expressed deep sorrow, stating that the loss has had a profound impact on the school community.
“Kearns Junior High is heartbroken,” the district said in a statement. “This accident has affected so many within our close-knit community.”
To support students and staff, the district’s Crisis Response Team was deployed to the school and will continue providing counseling and resources for those in need.
Safety Measures & Investigation
Kearns Mayor Kelly Bush addressed concerns about pedestrian safety, noting that while crossing guards are stationed at 4000 West and Sams Boulevard, the intersection where the crash occurred is equipped with flashing crossing signs and a raised median to improve safety.
“This terrible tragedy is still under investigation,” said Mayor Bush. “We will continue working with law enforcement and accident reconstruction teams to determine if any further safety improvements are needed.”
Authorities confirmed that the driver involved is cooperating, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Reminder for Drivers and Pedestrians
Both police and school officials are urging increased caution in school zones, especially during peak hours.
Granite School District reminded students to be extra aware when crossing streets and encouraged drivers to slow down and stay alert near schools.
“Students, always look both ways before crossing the street,” the district advised. “Drivers, please be extra vigilant in school zones, particularly before and after school hours.”
