Alleged Gang Member Faces Federal Charges for Attempted Murder of Brother

A Utah man with alleged ties to a criminal street gang appeared in court after reportedly attempting to murder his own brother on Christmas Day.

Javier Pedregon-Magana, 24, of West Jordan, also known by the nicknames “Big Payaso” and “Paya,” was indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City on February 12, 2025. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, he faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury—all as part of a violent crime in aid of racketeering.

Alleged Attack and Motive

Court records detail a brutal attack that took place on December 25, 2024. Pedregon-Magana is accused of ambushing his brother and stabbing him seven times. After the initial assault, he allegedly stole the victim’s car and attempted to run him over while he was trying to escape on foot.

Investigators believe the attack was premeditated and tied to gang-related activity. According to court documents, Pedregon-Magana was attempting to regain favor within his gang by carrying out the attack. Law enforcement sources say he told officers there was a “hit” on his brother, who was suspected of being an informant. Additionally, he claimed that his own life was in danger and that eliminating his brother was necessary to protect himself.

Law Enforcement and Legal Proceedings

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds and required urgent medical attention to survive. The case is currently being investigated by the Sandy City Police Department, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office Metro Gang Unit.

Authorities say the prosecution is part of the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which aims to combat violent crime and dismantle gang-related activities.

Pedregon-Magana remains in custody as legal proceedings continue .
