Man Arrested for Alleged New Year’s Eve Drive-By Shooting

SALT LAKE CITY – A man was arrested on New Year’s Eve for allegedly targeting a home in a drive-by shooting, putting multiple lives at risk.

On Dec. 31, a family hosting a New Year’s Eve party in West Valley City reported that a person in a black Tesla drove past their home three times and fired multiple shots at the house, according to a police affidavit.

Ten people were inside the residence at the time, including four children. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Officers responding to the scene found seven shell casings, along with damage to the home and three parked vehicles. Two of the victims identified the suspect as 27-year-old Anthony Junior Almaguer, whom they described as a family acquaintance. One victim stated that Almaguer had been harassing the family prior to the incident.

During the investigation, police learned that Almaguer had been apprehended by another department at the scene of a hit-and-run involving a black Tesla. Officers noted that he showed signs of intoxication.

Almaguer now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, as he is currently on parole. He is also charged with driving under the influence.

Police criticized Almaguer’s actions, citing his “wanton disregard for the safety of the general public,” especially given that the home was occupied by so many people, including children, during the attack.
