Draper, UT – The Living Planet Aquarium is mourning the loss of Koshi, a 10-year-old clouded leopard, who recently passed away due to complications from sudden-onset diabetes, the facility announced.
Despite receiving specialized veterinary care and showing initial signs of improvement, Koshi’s condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to his passing.
A Special Member of an Endangered Species
Koshi belonged to the clouded leopard species, which is endangered and native to Southeast Asia, China, and the Himalayan foothills. He was brought to Utah alongside Rhu, a female clouded leopard, as part of the Species Survival Plan—an initiative led by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to support the species’ genetic diversity and long-term survival.
Known for their impressive canine teeth, clouded leopards are sometimes referred to as “modern-day saber-tooths.” In 2022, BYU researchers successfully sequenced their genome for the first time, shedding light on their unique evolutionary traits.
Koshi’s Playful Personality and Unique Moments
Koshi was known not just for his striking appearance but also for his playful and energetic nature. Former Living Planet Aquarium zookeeper Laura Shipp once described him as an elegant yet mischievous feline, recalling how he loved to leap off walls and dart through the trees.
“He had a goofy side that people didn’t always see,” Shipp said on Koshi’s 6th birthday, explaining that the big cats often sleep up to 20 hours a day, leaving their more lively moments behind the scenes.
In addition to his lively antics, Koshi gained local fame for correctly predicting the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2023 Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles—choosing a red meat treat over a green one as his pick.
Remembering Koshi
The Living Planet Aquarium’s team expressed deep sorrow over his passing, noting that their veterinary and animal care specialists worked tirelessly to keep him comfortable throughout his treatment.
“Our staff and guests will greatly miss Koshi’s presence,” the aquarium shared in a statement. “He was a truly special animal who brought joy to so many.”
