Kanab Police Chief Thomas Cram admitted guilt earlier this month after hitting a pedestrian while driving through a crosswalk in November 2024.
The 62-year-old police chief entered a plea in abeyance on February 3, agreeing to plead guilty to failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, an infraction. The Special Assistant Kanab City Attorney approved the plea on February 10.
Incident Details
Court records indicate that on November 18, 2024, Cram failed to yield to a pedestrian crossing the road. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the victim sustained moderate to serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Despite the accident, Cram was not placed on administrative leave, as the case was not classified as an officer-involved critical incident. At the time of reporting, he remained listed as Kanab’s police chief on the city’s official website.
Concerns Over Crosswalk Safety
The accident took place at the intersection of 100 East and 300 South in Kanab, Utah, a location with a history of pedestrian-related incidents. One such case involved Michele Galaria, who was struck by a car there in 2017.
Galaria has long advocated for improved safety measures at this crosswalk. While minor adjustments were made following her accident, she believes more needs to be done.
“They conducted a traffic study and determined that major changes weren’t necessary, but they did implement a few modifications,” Galaria said.
She continues to push for stronger safety upgrades, including:
- Green arrow signals for turn lanes
- Restrictions on yellow turn signals
- Eliminating right turns at the intersection
The recent pedestrian accident involving Cram has reignited concerns about the safety of this intersection.
