As layoffs continue to affect industries across the country, Workday, a leading tech company with a presence in Salt Lake City, Utah, has announced significant job cuts.
On Wednesday, Workday’s CEO revealed plans to lay off 1,750 employees, accounting for 8.5% of its total workforce. According to ABC 4, these cuts are part of the company’s strategy to refocus on artificial intelligence (AI) investments.
In a memo sent to employees, Workday leadership explained that these layoffs align with the company’s growth efforts as it reallocates resources toward AI-driven innovations.
Office Closures and Future Hiring
While Workday plans to vacate some office spaces, the company has not disclosed which locations will be affected. Despite the job cuts, Workday will continue hiring for specific roles and at select locations, according to ABC 4.
Layoffs in Utah and Nationwide Trends
Workday’s layoffs are part of a broader trend in the tech industry, with companies across Utah and the U.S. restructuring in response to economic shifts and advancements in AI.
Data from USA Facts highlights the frequency of layoffs in Utah, showing that in September 2024 alone, 25,000 Utahns lost their jobs. Over the course of the year, 202,000 people were laid off statewide. Although this marks an increase from 2023, it remains below the mass layoffs seen during the 2020 pandemic.
The Challenges Ahead for Utah Workers
With economic uncertainty and evolving workforce demands, Utahns are facing an increasingly competitive job market. While some impacted employees may receive severance packages, these benefits are temporary, and securing new employment remains a challenge.
As 2025 begins with job cuts, it signals a transformative year for the U.S. labor market, especially in states like Utah, where tech and AI-driven industries continue to reshape employment opportunities.
