In a two-day crackdown along the Jordan River Trail, the Salt Lake City Police Department arrested 23 individuals and confiscated a significant amount of illegal drugs, including over 1,700 fentanyl pills. The operation, which took place on January 28 and 29, was a concentrated effort to reduce crime in the area, with officers dedicating a total of 311 hours to the task.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 13 people on felony charges and 10 individuals on misdemeanor charges. In addition to the fentanyl pills, police also seized 37 grams of heroin and nearly 21 grams of cocaine.
“This operation was a crucial success for our department and the community,” said Police Chief Mike Brown. “Our officers and detectives made significant progress in improving safety along the Jordan River Trail. However, we understand that there’s still work to be done. Our focus remains on enhancing public safety, addressing crime, and ensuring that those in need of support services have access to them.”
Social workers also participated in the operation, assisting police officers as they encountered individuals along the trail. One person voluntarily entered a substance use disorder treatment program, while another, arrested on felony charges, was offered mental health and drug abuse resources by the social workers on scene.
While operations like this are a routine part of the department’s efforts, recent additions to the city’s public safety plan, spearheaded by Mayor Erin Mendenhall, have brought additional measures to help make the area safer. These include trimming overgrown vegetation in high-crime zones, boosting security around Backman Elementary School, and installing security cameras in areas near Cottonwood Park and 500 North, known for high drug activity.
“The Salt Lake City Police Department will continue to monitor crime trends in these neighborhoods and expand both enforcement and intervention strategies across the city to enhance the overall safety and well-being of our residents,” the department stated in a press release.
