Next Round of Voting Starts for Utah’s NHL Team Name: Finalists Announced

Hockey fans in Utah, it’s time to make your voices heard! The next phase of voting is underway to decide what the state’s new NHL team will be called, and this round brings some exciting twists — including a fresh name that may catch you off guard.

The top contenders for the team’s official name are now: Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth, and Utah Wasatch.

While Utah Hockey Club and Utah Mammoth were previously in the mix during earlier rounds, the introduction of Utah Wasatch has sparked some intrigue. This new name, inspired by Utah’s Wasatch Mountain range, adds a unique, local touch to the naming process. But there’s a notable omission: Utah Yeti, which was previously a fan favorite, has been excluded.

According to a statement from the NHL, Utah Yeti was among the top six names in the most recent survey. However, the idea hit a snag when negotiations with YETI Coolers, LLC fell through. “Despite exploring all avenues to make Yeti work, the company ultimately declined to allow a co-existence agreement,” the release explained. As a result, Utah Wasatch has taken its place, offering a mythical yet Utah-centric option that taps into the state’s mountain heritage.

This voting round, which is the final phase in a comprehensive survey process, will focus not only on the name but also on logos and branding options. Voting will be open exclusively to fans attending the upcoming Utah Hockey Club home games at the Delta Center. The first opportunity to vote is during the game on January 29 against Pittsburgh, with the chance to cast your vote at the following games as well:

  • Friday, January 31 (vs. Columbus)
  • Sunday, February 2 (vs. St. Louis)
  • Tuesday, February 4 (vs. Philadelphia)

Fans will find SEG staff at the arena before and during each game to assist with the voting process. The team’s commitment to fan involvement in naming the franchise is being highlighted as a unique aspect of the process, with SEG confirming that the official team name will be announced ahead of the 2025-26 NHL season.

With these final decisions in play, the excitement is building as Utah hockey fans get closer to officially naming their new team!
