Patients affected by a data breach at Tampa General Hospital in Florida have just 24 hours left to claim compensation from a $6.8 million settlement. The breach, which occurred in 2023, compromised the personal data of around 2.1 million individuals, including sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, health insurance details, medical records, and treatment history.
The breach was discovered on or around May 31, 2023, and although Tampa General Hospital has agreed to settle, it has not admitted to any wrongdoing. Eligible individuals should have already received a notice from the Florida Health Science Center, informing them that their personal information may have been exposed.

The settlement provides different compensation categories based on the level of impact the breach had on individuals. However, anyone wishing to claim compensation must submit their claim by January 12, or risk losing their opportunity to participate in the settlement.
Available Compensation for Affected Individuals
- No Losses: Class members who were notified about the breach but did not experience any financial losses can claim a flat payment of $125.
- Documented Losses: Individuals who incurred expenses like travel, bank fees, or communication charges due to the breach can receive up to $1,500.
- Extraordinary Losses: Those who faced significant financial damages, such as identity theft or fraudulent charges, may be eligible for up to $7,500, provided they submit evidence of their losses (e.g., receipts, bank statements, or credit reports).
- Lost Time Compensation: If you lost time dealing with the breach, you can claim up to $100 for up to four hours of lost time at $25 per hour.
In addition to these monetary compensations, all impacted individuals are entitled to one year of free credit monitoring services, covering all three major bureaus.
Important Deadlines
- January 12, 2025: The final date to submit your claim. After this, you will no longer be eligible for compensation.
- December 28, 2024: If you did not wish to be part of the settlement, you had until this date to exclude yourself, preserving your right to take legal action but forfeiting your share of the payout.
Failure to meet the claim deadline could affect your legal rights and ability to seek future action against the hospital regarding this breach.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for February 3, 2025.
Additionally, there is another settlement available for individuals who received telemarketing calls from an online pharmacy, with compensation ranging from $600 to $1,500 for eligible claimants.
If you were impacted by this breach, act now to submit your claim and secure your compensation before time runs out!
