A wanted fugitive was arrested on Sunday, Jan. 26, after Salt Lake City police officers apprehended him during an enforcement operation on the Jordan River Trail. The 54-year-old man, identified as Troy Olson, was found to be in possession of illegal drugs and stolen mail.
The investigation began around 11:45 p.m. when officers responded to reports of illegal camping in the area near 1170 West California Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered Olson camping unlawfully. A check of his records revealed that he had outstanding felony warrants related to drug offenses.
During the investigation, officers uncovered drugs and drug paraphernalia, including a glass pipe with residue and burn marks. Police believe Olson intended to sell or use the drugs. In addition to drug charges, Olson was also found with stolen mail.

Olson was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and mail theft.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown highlighted the importance of community involvement in combating crime. “This investigation shows the value of reporting illegal activity,” he said. “Officers were able to identify not just a person using drugs, but someone willing to sell them along the Jordan River Trail. Our officers remain committed to keeping public spaces safe from crime.”
As always, charges are allegations, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
