Criminal Charge Filed After ‘I Love You’ Precedes Brutal Stabbing

A 24-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing another man in the stomach, causing severe injuries that nearly proved fatal. Nathaniel David Ferguson, whose address is currently unknown, has been charged with aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, a second-degree felony, in connection with the incident.

The stabbing occurred on January 16, near 1470 S. State Street in Salt Lake City. Police arrived to find a 37-year-old man suffering from a deep, life-threatening wound to his stomach. The victim, wrapped in a blanket, had a significant laceration, with his intestines exposed. According to charging documents, the wound appeared to have penetrated from the front of his stomach to the back, potentially injuring his spinal cord.

Medical professionals initially struggled to determine whether the victim would survive, temporarily halting their efforts before performing further surgery the following day. Thankfully, the victim survived the ordeal, but his injuries were severe.

Ferguson later told detectives that he and the victim had been spending time together when they decided to engage in what he described as a “gang meeting.” Ferguson claimed that the victim asked him to stab him, and witnesses reported hearing the victim express affection toward Ferguson before the stabbing occurred.

Witnesses confirmed that they saw both men holding the knife, but no defensive wounds were found on the victim. According to police, they had to intervene physically, stepping on Ferguson’s hand and using tear gas before he released the weapon.

A correction was made in the charges on Wednesday, clarifying that while the victim lost a significant amount of blood, the 19 liters previously reported were an error.
