A mysterious explosion rocked multiple cities in the Salt Lake Valley overnight, with residents from areas like West Valley City, Taylorsville, and Murray reporting hearing a powerful boom just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. Local police and KSL TV received numerous tips from concerned citizens, some of whom also captured a bright flash of light on outdoor surveillance cameras.
West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt noted the unusual nature of the reports. “We received calls from locations just hundreds of yards apart, and even a mile away. That’s not something we usually experience,” he said. One of their officers also witnessed the flashes of light and heard the loud boom firsthand.

Despite officers responding to the area of the reports, no unusual objects or signs of activity were found. The situation only became more perplexing as additional calls continued to pour in from across the region.
“Typically, when we get shots fired reports, we get multiple calls from one neighborhood or within a quarter-mile radius,” Merritt explained. “But these calls were coming from miles apart—spanning different cities. It’s clear this was something significant.”
At this time, authorities have no further details about the cause of the explosion, but they have launched an investigation.
“This is something I’ve never encountered in my career. It’s definitely strange,” Merritt remarked. The investigation into the mysterious incident is still ongoing.
