Federal Immigration Arrests in Utah Schools: Districts Take Action

Federal immigration officers are now authorized to make arrests on school and church grounds, locations that were once considered off-limits. This new directive, which took effect during inauguration week, has sparked concern among parents and local school districts alike, as it comes under the Trump administration’s policy changes.

In light of the policy shift, several school districts in the Salt Lake area, including Granite, Canyons, and Salt Lake City School Districts, have taken proactive steps to inform families of the changes. Districts have issued letters and notifications to parents, reassuring them that students are still welcome in schools, regardless of their immigration status.

Temma Martin, a parent with a child in the Salt Lake School District, expressed deep concern after receiving a notice from the district. “What it represents is terrifying and heartbreaking,” Martin said, sharing her fear about the new directive.

District spokesperson Yándary Chatwin reiterated that Salt Lake City School District does not collect or share students’ immigration status. The district has also clarified that it will not engage with federal immigration authorities for the purpose of sharing information about students. To support students who may feel uneasy or anxious, counselors are available to assist within the schools.

“We’ve been closely monitoring these changes from the Department of Homeland Security,” Chatwin said, noting the district’s efforts to provide clarity and calm in light of the policy’s impact on families.

Despite the reassurances, some parents, like Martin, feel this change signals a more troubling trend. “It feels apocalyptic to me,” she shared, adding that the policy highlights the overlooked role of undocumented workers in society.

Similar letters have been sent by other districts in the region, with Canyons School District also addressing concerns in a detailed email to families. The district emphasized its continued commitment to a safe, inclusive environment for all students, regardless of immigration status. Canyons District also reminded families that schools do not gather or share immigration information and encouraged parents to ensure that emergency contact details are up to date.

“All children in America, regardless of their immigration status, have the right to a free and appropriate education,” said Chatwin, reiterating the district’s stance.

Canyons District’s communication further assured families that wellness counselors would be available at schools to help students manage any stress or anxiety caused by the policy change.

In Granite School District, a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) was provided to families to further clarify the district’s position and provide information on how the new federal guidelines may affect students.

As these changes unfold, school districts continue to stress their commitment to a safe and welcoming environment for all students, emphasizing that the right to an education is a fundamental one, regardless of immigration status.
