Utah Authorities Arrest Man for Alleged Kidnapping and Hostage Situation
Salt Lake City – A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Salt Lake City after allegedly holding a woman hostage and threatening her with a knife in a tense standoff. Toney Murray now faces multiple charges, including aggravated kidnapping, failure to disclose identity, and aggravated assault.
Incident Overview
Salt Lake City police responded to a disturbance involving a weapon on Friday morning, around 9:04 a.m., near the area of 288 W 1300 S. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the victim, who reported that a man had been in her apartment for several days and had threatened to harm himself and her.
Details of the Standoff
According to the victim, Murray had been staying at her apartment for approximately a week. On January 15, she returned home to find him armed with a knife and threatening both to harm himself and to kill her. As the situation escalated, Murray allegedly choked the victim during the confrontation.
Court documents further detail that when the victim attempted to leave the apartment, Murray stood in the doorway with the knife, blocking her escape and continuing to threaten her. Video evidence later confirmed that Murray had pushed the victim back into the apartment during the altercation.

The Victim’s Escape
On Friday, the victim was able to convince Murray to let her leave by claiming she needed to speak with her landlord. Once outside, the property manager called the police, prompting officers to take immediate action.
Suspect’s Arrest
Police set up a containment area outside the apartment before engaging with Murray at the door. He was taken into custody without resistance, and investigators now have him charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, and failure to disclose his identity.
The case is still under investigation, and Murray remains in custody facing serious charges related to the incident .
