Days after West High School Principal Dr. Jared Wright was unexpectedly placed on leave, the Salt Lake City School District has responded to growing speculation about the situation.
On Monday, Jan. 13, the district confirmed that Assistant Principal Wayne Culley has stepped in as the school’s acting principal. A district spokesperson assured the public that West High remains in good hands but did not provide additional details regarding Wright’s leave.
Addressing the Rumors
The abrupt leadership change has sparked speculation, with some rumors suggesting that Wright’s leave was linked to concerns he had raised about school safety. However, in a statement released on Friday, Jan. 17, the school district firmly denied any connection between Wright’s situation and safety issues at West High.

“We take the safety of our West High School community – and all of our school communities – very seriously,” the district stated. “We fully support our employees in voicing their safety concerns, as we all share the same goal of providing a safe learning and working environment.”
Limited Information Due to Policy
Citing board policies and state and federal laws, the district emphasized that it must uphold due process for its employees and maintain confidentiality regarding personnel matters. Officials stated that further comments on Wright’s leave would be “inappropriate.”
Despite the lack of details, the district assured the community that it remains committed to addressing any safety concerns at West High, working alongside staff and administration to ensure a secure school environment
