Major Retailer Closing All Utah Stores Immediately – What Shoppers Need to Know
Party supply giant Party City is shutting down all 850 of its stores in 2025, marking the end of an era for last-minute celebration shoppers across Utah. The retailer, known for its vast selection of balloons, costumes, and themed decorations, is closing its doors due to financial struggles and increasing competition.
The Final Curtain Call for Party City
For years, Party City has been the go-to destination for everything from birthday parties to school dances. But now, Utahns will have to find new places to grab their glow sticks, streamers, and cowboy hats.
The company’s CEO, Barry Litwin, broke the news in a virtual meeting, confirming that all locations would shut down immediately. Unfortunately, employees won’t receive severance pay or benefits, making the abrupt closure even tougher for workers.
Why the Shutdown?
Several factors contributed to Party City’s downfall. Rising inflation, supply chain issues, and online competition from giants like Amazon made it difficult to keep up. The ongoing helium shortage also played a role, limiting balloon sales—a core part of Party City’s business. With mounting debt and declining foot traffic, the company had little choice but to close up shop.

Impact on Utah
From Salt Lake City to St. George, Party City has been a staple for families, event planners, and schools in need of last-minute decorations. Its absence will leave a noticeable gap, with shoppers now turning to big-box stores like Target or Walmart for their party needs.
There’s a good chance Spirit Halloween will take over some of the empty locations, but a seasonal store can’t fully replace a year-round party destination.
A Sign of the Times
Party City’s closure is just one example of a larger trend in retail. Many brick-and-mortar chains are struggling to survive in an era where online shopping dominates, and shopping centers across the country are seeing more vacant spaces.
While Party City may have been a little pricey, it was also a reliable source of celebration essentials. As Utahns say goodbye to the retailer, they’ll be left searching for a new go-to spot for their party needs.
