Salt Lake School District Responds to Rumors About West High Principal’s Leave

In the wake of West High Principal Dr. Jared Wright’s unexpected leave, Salt Lake City School District is clarifying the situation and addressing rumors that have surfaced in the community.

On Monday, Jan. 13, the district confirmed that Assistant Principal Wayne Culley would serve as the “Acting Principal” during Dr. Wright’s absence. However, a district spokesperson did not provide further details, assuring the public that the school remains in capable hands.

Amidst the leadership change, speculation and rumors have circulated about the reasons for Dr. Wright’s leave, particularly regarding concerns related to school safety. The district, however, firmly dismissed these claims. A spokesperson stated that the two matters are completely unrelated, emphasizing that safety concerns have been and will continue to be addressed.

In a statement issued on Friday, Jan. 17, the district emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the due process required by law. They noted that sharing further information about Dr. Wright’s leave would be inappropriate, as legal and procedural considerations must be respected.

The Salt Lake City School District reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of the West High community and all its schools, noting, “We take the safety of our school communities very seriously.” The statement continued by stressing the district’s full support for employees voicing safety concerns, as their shared goal is to ensure a secure learning environment for students and staff.

The district further assured the public that it would continue collaborating with West High School’s administration and staff to address any concerns regarding safety that may arise.
