Deadly Five-Vehicle Crash on I-80 Near Salt Lake Airport Claims One Life

SALT LAKE CITY – A tragic crash involving five vehicles and a fire has claimed at least one life on the west side of Salt Lake County.

The accident occurred Thursday evening at approximately 7:40 p.m. on westbound Interstate 80 near 7200 West in Salt Lake City. The location is about five miles west of Salt Lake City International Airport and eight miles east of the Great Saltair.

According to Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol, one person was confirmed dead as a result of the crash. The identity of the victim has not been released.

The incident began when a pickup truck rear-ended a car, which caused both vehicles to catch fire. The crash set off a chain reaction, involving three additional vehicles. The man who died was in the car that was rear-ended; he was identified as a 47-year-old from Tooele. The driver of the pickup, a 33-year-old man, was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

The crash created significant traffic disruptions, with video from the scene showing long backups. Traffic was diverted off the interstate at 7200 West, and drivers were advised to avoid the area.

Officials from the Utah Highway Patrol said they expected the road closure to last two to three hours as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
