Salt Lake City Police seized a partially assembled rifle at City Creek Mall on Saturday, but authorities say there was no public threat.
According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance reported at 5:33 p.m. at a coffee shop located at 80 S. Main Street. An employee had reported seeing what appeared to be firearm components inside a backpack belonging to a 33-year-old man.

Police quickly arrived at the scene and searched for the man. Officers, along with City Creek safety personnel, located and detained him. During the investigation, they found a mostly assembled rifle inside the man’s backpack. However, the police stated there was no evidence to suggest the rifle had been fully assembled.
The man, a tourist from Australia, is under investigation to determine how he came into possession of the firearm. No charges have been filed, and his identity has not been disclosed. Authorities emphasized that they do not believe there is any threat to public safety.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been contacted as part of the ongoing investigation.
