Kohl’s Closing 27 Stores Across the U.S., Including Utah Location
Kohl’s is closing 27 stores across more than a dozen states as part of its efforts to improve profitability. The closures, which are set to be completed by April, represent a small fraction of the retailer’s total 1,150 stores and have been labeled as “underperforming,” according to a company press release. Despite these closures, Kohl’s expressed confidence in the overall strength and profitability of its remaining store base.
This decision comes under the leadership of outgoing CEO Tom Kingsbury, who is stepping down on Wednesday and will be succeeded by Ashley Buchanan, currently the CEO of arts and crafts chain Michaels. Kingsbury will remain with the company as an adviser to Buchanan and as a board member until his retirement in May.
“We always take these decisions very seriously,” said Kingsbury. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

Kohl’s, like many department stores, has faced challenges in recent years as it struggles to adapt to shifting consumer behavior. The company does not expect a strong holiday shopping season, recently revising its sales forecast to predict a larger decline than previously expected. Over the past six months, Kohl’s stock has dropped nearly 40%.
In 2022, Kohl’s was embroiled in a contentious battle with activist investors, who pushed for the company to spin off its online business, sell its real estate, or go private. Ultimately, Kohl’s decided against a sale, marking another chapter in the retailer’s ongoing struggles.
Kohl’s closures follow similar actions by Macy’s, which announced the shuttering of 66 locations last week amid its own difficulties in attracting shoppers during inflationary pressures.
